A new poke and sushi burrito restaurant named Umami PokéRito will open mid- to late June at 7510 Pineville-Matthews Road.
They’ll be taking over the space previously occupied by Sweet Frog.
Get ready for build-your-own poke bowls and sushi burritos.
You’ll pick a wrap or bowl base, protein, 5 toppings, and sauce. Prices range from $7.50 to $9.50, and premium toppings cost an extra $1 each.
You can also order off the chef’s signature menu for $10 to $13.25 (no substitutions).
Here’s a look at the Chef Signature burritos and bowls.
Chef and owner Chuchen Lou grew up in the southeast but spent the last six years as the executive chef at Red Rock Casino Hotel in Vegas.
Before that, he hopped around several restaurants in NYC, including Blue Smoke and Gramercy Tavern. With a passion for Japanese cuisine, he’s excited to open his dream restaurant here in Charlotte.
His chef partner from Vegas is also joining him at Umami PokéRito.
For those wondering, Chef Chuchen describes “umami” as a sixth sense, when flavors are mixed together to make the perfect taste. He related it to the feeling of taking that first sip of a crisp, cold beer.
And obviously, “pokérito” refers to the fusion of poke, a fish salad with origins in Hawaii, and a Mexican burrito.
Umami PokéRito will be open Monday – Saturday, 10:30 AM – 9 PM and Sundays from 10:30 AM – 6 PM.
