If you think Charlotte doesn’t have history, you’ve never ate a Super Boy Hamburger from South 21.

The exact address is 3101 East Independence Boulevard. It’s an 8-minute drive from Uptown. Hours are Tuesday (11am – 3pm), Wednesday & Thursday (11am – 9pm) and Friday & Saturday (11am – 9:30pm).
Located a few miles from Uptown Charlotte on Independence, South 21 hasn’t changed much since it opened in 1955.

There must be close to 100 drive-in spots where you can park and order. The old school billboards and signage around the restaurant are just fantastic.
Push the intercom button and order the Jumbo Cheeseburger. About 5 minutes later, a waiter will bring you this tray.

If you’re feeling adventurous, order the Fish-O-Burger ($6.75) — two pieces of filet-of-Trout, tarter sauce, cup of slaw and french fries.
The Jumbo Cheeseburger is their Super Boy Hamburger (two beef patties, mustard, onions, lettuce and tomatoes) with two slices of cheese and french fries for $5.95.

The thin patties and melted cheese fit perfectly over the condiments. Sesame seed bun was both soft and fresh.
Since I have fragile internet hands, I decided to sit at one of South 21’s few picnic tables instead of eating in my car.

All of South 21’s food can be boxed to go at no extra charge. There’s also a takeout window inside.
Instead of eating another of one of Charlotte’s $12 craft burgers, maybe it’s time to go curbside…

One regret I have is that I didn’t order South 21’s famous Onion Rings… next time.
