Before

For Beth Donovan, finally getting around to the kitchen remodel she had always wanted was about more than just backsplashes and countertops — it was about celebrating her grown kids McLean and Bill, and paying tribute to the late Bill Sr.

The exterior of Beth’s Eastover condo.

“All the pictures of Bill were in the kitchen cooking, always side by side cooking with the kids or reading a recipe. And all the burners were always on,” said Beth, explaining how the tiny 1990s kitchen had always been a point of frustration for the foodie family.

Hanging out in the kitchen and every inch of counter space gets used…

Not at all deterred by the challenge of a smaller space with an unusual shape, Beth called on Mills Eloge to to help her create a plan that would maximize space and give her entire home a fresh and airy look.

Getting started

As Mills Eloge project manager Shelley Atkins explained, their first stop was Queen City Audio Video & Appliances. “The process starts with choosing appliances because that dictates the openings for the range, the dishwasher, the refrigerator… so you have to start on that first before anything else,” said Shelley. “It all starts with Chip and Teresa over at Queen City.”

In progress

Based on her cooking habits, desire for a “not too industrial” hood and personal style, Chip helped Beth and the team finalize the appliances, and also go to work choosing countertops and other details.

“I knew I didn’t want marble countertops because we love to cook, but still wanted it to be beautiful,” said Beth. “With grandchildren in the future, I wanted it to be indestructible and have that balance of cool and warm with the stainless appliances… When we looked the quartzite we said ‘This is it.'”

The Mills Eloge team got to work, completely gutting the space.

After

After years of wishing for a change and several weeks of work from the Mills Eloge crew and partner vendors — from paint to electric to replacing the entire floor — Beth had her “dream kitchen” at last, one Bill would have loved too.
