Elizabeth’s newest apartment community, The Langston, wasn’t exactly welcome with open arms at first.

“The neighborhood fought us on a lot of things,” Eric Speckman, one of the driving forces behind the project, said about the historic site. For instance, parking would need to include retail spaces and the exterior would have to make sense with the neighborhood’s aesthetic. “Elizabeth is a passionate neighborhood, but we worked closely with a number of folks in the neighborhood and it was a great experience.”

But Speckman thinks that the 91-unit building that they’ve created will satisfy everyone and bring in a number of people to the area. He says that with the location, they’re expecting to cater more to an older demographic; think families with kids or even empty-nesters. The lack of pool (which they would also have expected the neighborhood to fight) also lends itself to this idea.

Construction is wrapping up, with just a few more “punch list” items to cross off the list. By the time residents move in, amenities will include a dog spa, rooftop deck (with a killer view of the skyline) and courtyard complete with an outdoor kitchen and fire pit.

Rent for the studio, one- and two-bedroom units will range from $1,100 to $2,200.
