A new Charlotte tradition is taking shape this holiday season and people are a little bit excited about it.

The inaugural Charlotte Christmas Village will turn Romare Bearden Park into a German-style christkindlmarkt complete with vendors in wooden huts, specialty foods (read: sausage), live performances and plenty of mulled wine.

The festivities kick off next week after the Thanksgiving Day parade and run through Christmas Eve.

Admission is free and the village will be open the entire month. Hours are 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

A special grand opening celebration is scheduled for 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 26 with appearances from Mayor Jennifer Roberts, Opera Carolina carolers, Charlotte Ballet dancers and Santa.

If you need a plan of attack, schedule your visit around these recurring weekly features…

Live Performances

Live performances will take place on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. And Santa will be on hand to hear your Christmas wishes every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 3 p.m.

Themed Weekends

Themed weekends with appearances and takeovers from special guests will include Historic Charlotte Weekend (12/3-4), German Weekend (12/9-11) and Focus on Nonprofits Weekend (11/17-18).

But what about the food, right?

5Church is the headline food vendor providing all bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad and Blue Blaze Brewing will provide the beer.

They’ll also have vendors selling strudel, bavarian nuts, mini doughnuts and more.

If you need to check some items off your holiday to-do list, they’ll have gift vendors and a Christmas tree lot on site as well.

Vendors will be selling handmade items, German imports, unique jewelry, specialty foods and more. You can even pick up a live tree, wreath or garland while you’re there.
