It was a normal Monday morning. I was in my first meeting of the day, sipping on my cup of coffee. Suddenly, during a coworker’s weekend recap, I heard two incredible words uttered, “llama winery.”

My eyes opened wide. “A llama winery,” I repeated slowly, just to make sure I hadn’t dreamed it. My coworker nodded. And then, like I was interrogating a criminal, I asked, “WHERE IS IT?”

I learned it was a mere 90 minutes away and, obviously, I started planning a day trip.

I decided to bring along one of my best friends, Abby, who explained to me that she, due to her Maine upbringing, had never seen a llama in person before. Oh boy.

The Saturday arrived and we drove up to the winery, not knowing what to expect.

Upon googling directions, we found a Yelp review that started with “I shouldn’t say that a llama winery changed my life…”

Expectations were high to say the least.

After a 90-minute drive and lunch in Winston-Salem, we arrived at Divine Llama Winery. We were greeted with a colorful sign, gravel driveway, rows of grapevines…

AND LLAMAS.

There were three real live llamas out on leashes and they were majestic.

We tried hard to keep our cool but there was zero chill to be found.

Inside, we were greeted by a friendly member of their staff who helped us select wine. You can taste all of their wines for just $9. A bargain, if you ask me.

I went with a glass of rosé, which was delightful and refreshing.

They have a charming porch with rocking chairs and tables on the lawn where you can sit and enjoy your vino. You can even bring your own snacks.

And the winery itself is extremely scenic.

But we all know the real reason why we’re here. THE LLAMAS.

There are roughly 70 of them on the property. Each unique and beautiful in their own way.

I’ve been warned that llamas will spit on you but most of them were actually very friendly.

Did one sneeze in my face? Sure. But it’s all part of the experience.

At the end of the day, we sat on the porch and thought about all the breathtaking llamas we had encountered.

Was it life changing? Yes.

Can I truly explain why? No.

You’ll just have to go see for yourself.
