Last year, a company headed by Carolina Panther Charles Johnson bought the old firehouse on 5th Street with plans to turn it into a restaurant.
Fun fact: The company is called Randy Watson Holdings LLC. Johnson is on Twitter @randywattson. The property went for $1.6 million, according to land records.
Thanks to the Historic District Commission, we have a look at what’s in the works.
And if you’re into historic preservation, you’ll be pleased. The restaurant will maintain a lot of the aesthetic the firehouse had.

FYI: The firehouse was built in 1926 and was in service until 1972. It’s seekingĀ National Register status from the
National Park Service.
The management team submitted plans as part of their application to the commission. This has already been approved by theĀ Mecklenburg County Historic Landmarks Commission (yes, you have to go through a lot of steps when you’re working Uptown).
Bonus cool points for the rooftop terrace.
No word on when this will be ready to open.
There’s still a lot to do. Here’s what the inside looks like right now.
