I played competitive soccer my entire life. I did the travel club soccer thing, the soccer training camps, and I played for my high school. So, when a viral bubble soccer video popped onto my newsfeed, I couldn’t not click. Enthralled and perplexed, I had questions. How do you run in the bubble? Where do I put my arms? How do I get up once I’ve fallen? But I knew one thing: I had to try it.
What is Bubble Soccer, exactly?
The same rules as regular soccer, just add an inflatable bubble.
Where can I play in Charlotte?
Breakaway Sports, 3917 Trailer Drive, Suite C.
When can I play?
Saturdays, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
How much does it cost?
$20 per player
Who can play?
Anyone — first come, first served. Bring your friends along for the ultimate battle or hang with other players pick-up game style.
What should I wear?
Athletic clothing and sneakers. Shin guards are not required.
How does the bubble work?
You crawl to get into the bubble, arms raised over your head. Then, you grab the shoulder straps on the inside of the bubble and pull yourself in, the straps fitting like a backpack.
Is it hard to breathe?
Your head is not covered, so there is no need to worry about breathing. Your hands grip the handles inside and are stationed in front of you — a position that is comfortable and natural to brace any fall.
Will I get injured?
No, the bubbles are stronger than they appear and very safe. Breakaway Sports has not had any serious injuries reported during the games.
Can this count as my workout for the day?
Sure, you will definitely break a sweat. (It all depends on the amount of effort you exert and how competitive you want to make the game).
If I don’t play soccer, will I still enjoy myself?
Yes, no skill is necessary. The games are low-key and about fun, not about winning or losing.
See, even Kendall Jenner plays.
Breakaway Sports also hosts private Bubble Soccer events. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a birthday or release some stress at the office than bouncing, knocking, and rolling all over each other. Call for reservations.
Bring your friends and a willingness to make a fool of yourself. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
