B-cycle has teamed up with Charlotte’s Best Boot Camp to offer a free weekly workout every Thursday in May.
The inaugural B-Cycle Boot Camp took place last week with about 30 riders rolling from Triple C down the Rail Trail to 7th Street Public Market and then back (6 miles total).
B-cycle provided the bikes for free and also gave each participant a helmet to keep for future rides.
If you’ve never taken a B-cycle out for a spin, this is a free, low-pressure opportunity to give it a try. If you’re entirely unfamiliar with Charlotte’s B-cycle bike share program, read more here.
Bodyweight workout intervals are staggered along the 3-mile route to the market.
The idea is to add bursts of strength and cardio conditioning to an otherwise leisurely ride.
Workout intervals included things like burpees (ugh), mountain climbers, lunges, ledge jumps and squats.
Trainers demonstrated quick instruction on proper form for each move and provided modifications to make the workout accessible to varying levels of fitness.
My Take
This was a unique way to introduce people to ways they can utilize communal amenities like the Rail Trail and the B-cycle bikes for a free workout. The workout segments were accessible and gave participants an opportunity to push harder or back off according to what we could handle. I also definitely experienced one of those childlike moments of bicycle bliss as we were racing down the trail to beat the rain back to Triple C. Riding bikes is just fun.
That said, this event is also an excellent opportunity to introduce (or re-emphasize) rules for basic safe cycling to new and experienced riders alike. I noticed some participants were definitely unfamiliar with proper bike etiquette so a quick overview prior to the start of the workout would be a great addition to this class.
The next ride is Thursday, May 12 and you can sign up here. Space is limited to the first 30 riders and if you sign up and don’t show, you’re banned from signing up for future events.
