Jackalope Jack’s owner Rob Nixon is upfitting the old Philosopher’s Stone into a dog bar set to open in the next two weeks.

Philosophers Stone dog bag

  • Philosopher’s Stone abruptly closed up shop back in April after a 10-year run on the corner of 7th Street and Caswell.
  • According to The Observer, Nixon, who owns Jackalope Jack’s next door and Peculiar Rabbit in Plaza Midwood, has signed an 18-month lease on the Philsopher’s Stone property.
  • The P-Stone property is currently being renovated to rebrand as a dog bar, including new fencing outside to keep dogs contained.
  • Although the P-Stone property is equipped with a full kitchen, the forthcoming dog bar will not serve its own food due to health code regulations. Food will be served from nearby Crisp, SandwichMax and Peculiar Rabbit.
  • The new dog bar will likely be the last tenant in the P-Stone property. Charlotte-based developer Faison Enterprises is in negotiations to build a 160-unit apartment complex with ground floor retail on the 1.5-acre lot currently home to Jack’s and P-Stone.
  • The as-of-yet unnamed new dog bar in Elizabeth will join The Dog Bar in NoDa and Lucky Dog in Cornelius as establishments where dogs run the show. What differentiates a true “dog bar” from a “dog-friendly bar”? Dog-friendly bars and restaurants may permit dogs outside on patios and decks but can still serve food. Dog bars let dogs inside, on tables and pretty much anywhere they want to go and are not allowed to serve food.
