If you’re from the South, you’ve probably grown up on grits – cheese grits, shrimp and grits, plain grits with a dash of salt and a tablespoon of butter. But if you’re one of the many transplants who have made the Queen City your home, you might not be as familiar with this Southern specialty.

If you want to call yourself a true Southerner, you’re going to need to get familiar with the South’s favorite dish. Here are a few places where you can find some of the best grits in Charlotte.

Krazy Fish

The Jalapeño Cheddar Cheese Grits Soufflé at Krazy Fish is more cheddar than jalapeño and more life-changing than not. With only a slight jalapeño kick, these cheesy grits are thick and fork-worthy, just the way you wish your grandma made them.

You can get the jalapeño grits soufflé on its own for $2.75 or as a side to your meal (I recommend the Southern Fried Calamari tacos).

Krazy-Fish-grits
Everything at Krazy Fish is a “krazy” deal, including $1 mystery beers. And if you’re looking for a new brunch spot, Krazy Fish in Plaza Midwood will not disappoint. Not only can you start your weekend morning right with the Jalapeño Cheddar Cheese Grits Souffle, but you’ll also get a mimosa included in the price of your meal.

The Flying Biscuit

The Flying Biscuit’s “Creamy Dreamy” grits might be the reason I fell in love with grits in the first place. They’re not cheesy and they don’t need to be.

I recommend trying the creamy dreamy grits as a side with the Egg-Stravaganza breakfast, which includes eggs, chicken sausage, bacon and whole wheat French toast topped with homemade raspberry sauce and honey crème anglaise. Drooling yet? Yeah, I thought so.

Try the Flying Biscuit location on Park Road or at Stonecrest in South Charlotte for a heavenly experience.

Leroy Fox

Leroy Fox, located on the corner of Providence and Sharon Amity where the Hotel Charlotte used to be, serves Southern favorites like fried chicken, mac and cheese and, of course, grits. They look like a cheesy paradise and taste like a million calories.

The Cheesy Grits at Leroy Fox are $3.25 on their own or you can get them as a side with dishes like Cannoli Cream French Toast. Amber Riddle, a waitress at Leroy Fox, says the secret to the cheesy grits at Leroy Fox is double cheese: the cheese cooked in the grits and the extra cheese added on top when they’re served. Revolutionary? No. But delicious? Definitely. Leroy Fox only serves their full brunch menu on Sundays, but you can get the grits anytime.
