Wawa to open eight North Carolina stores next year

Wawa, the convenience store chain with a cult following, is continuing its expansion into North Carolina with eight locations in the eastern part of the state planned to open in 2024.

  • Still, the popular brand hasn’t announced any plans for Charlotte.

“For now we are focusing on expansion in Eastern North Carolina, but we look forward to spreading our wings further in the state in the future,” spokesperson Lori Bruce told Axios.

Catch up quick: Wawa currently operates in six states and Washington, D.C. The retailer and gas station operator is known for its popular food menu, with offerings like hoagies and mac and cheese.

What’s next: Wawa’s goal is to open 80 locations in the next 10 years, WRAL reports.
  • The company has more than 30 sites under contract currently going through local approval processes, according to a statement from the company. Wawa plans to open up to 15 stores in 2025 and 10 stores in 2026.
  • The company’s real estate team is scouting for new locations throughout North Carolina.

  • Benvenue Road & Jeffreys Road — Rocky Mount
  • Wayne Memorial Drive & Hospital Road — Goldsboro
  • Stantonsburg Road & Moye Boulevard — Greenville
  • US Highway 70 & NC Highway 581 — Goldsboro

Of note: There’s no exact date for when Wawa’s first North Carolina store will open.
