September came and went in what feels like a blink of an eye. But we made time to dine out at some new local spots.
Here are 5 of the best dishes we ate this month, listed in no particular order.
The blanco pizza from Pizza Baby in Wesley Heights
I’m obsessed. Chef Trey Wilson had me at the roasted garlic cream and prosciutto on the blanco pizza ($28). I’ve heard there are contenders, but I’ll go to the mat that this is the best pizza in Charlotte. — Ashley Mahoney, reporter
Tree Hugger omelet from the Crunkleton in Elizabeth
At a recent brunch with girlfriends at the Crunkleton, I had the “Tree Hugger” omelet ($18) — a huge and beautiful brunch dish packed with Swiss chard, tomatoes, mushrooms, asparagus, avocado, kale, goat cheese and avocado crema, plus a heaping pile of this rich hashbrown casserole on the side. As tasty as it was pretty. — Katie Peralta Soloff, editor
The chicken avocado wrap from The People’s Market in Elizabeth
The People’s Market menu is stacked, so in the midst of choice paralysis, I asked the employee at the counter their pick, which is how I came to know my new favorite lunch order. The chicken avocado wrap ($10.99) is made with cajun grilled chicken, bacon, pepper jack, honey mustard, avocado, lettuce, pico and tortilla. PS — pair it with a Coke Zero and your favorite chips for an extra satisfying lunch. — McKenzie Rankin, reporter
Selecciones de la casa at Bakersfield in Dilworth
For a friend’s birthday, eight of us joined at Bakersfield in Dilworth for the Selecciones De La Casa ($18 per person). They bring you multiple courses. We started off snacking on chips and dips, then shared a salad, and then got a display of their various tacos. Your party needs to have at least six people to partake. — Alex Sands, reporter
The crème brûlée from Coquette in Uptown
I have quite the sweet tooth, so I always leave room for dessert. I can’t stop thinking about this crème brûlée ($9) from Coquette. Its caramelized sugar topping was thin and easy to crack, and the custard was so good. — Laura Barrero, editor
- Bonus: I also can’t stop thinking about the almond cake from Chapter 6 in South End.
