Chief of Finance
Sugar Creek Charter School is the oldest charter school in Mecklenburg County serving the area most vulnerable children. Our mission is to eradicate generational poverty through a K-12 college and career readiness education and we are succeeding. We are the only school where 100% of our graduates have been accepted to college with scholarship and offer the areas only alumni program that provides support to our graduates 5-years post graduation.
Overview:
Sugar Creek is looking for a Chief of Finance who will support our mission through:
• Internal control over financial reporting and protection of assets. This includes ensuring appropriate segregation of duties with respect to authority pertaining to financial affairs
• Federal, state and local governmental compliance, including grant compliance and reporting
• Development of initial working draft of annual budget, including anticipated capital expenditures. The annual budget as approved by the Superintendent to be presented by the Superintendent to the Board for final action
• Monthly tracking of actual results to budget, including interaction with School’s financial service provider (Acadia NorthStar), and the Board Treasurer
• Ensuring timely adjustments to the annual budget so that projected end-of year results of operations and cash position reflect the latest reasonably available data
• It is expected that adjustments will occur no less frequently than as of the end of November or December (depending on the finalization of the State budget), and as of the end of January, March and June
• Cash flow management, including the maintenance of bank accounts, timely deposit of funds received, and ensuring liquidity on a timely basis, and safety, of any short-term investments (which investments must receive the prior approval of the Board’s Finance Committee)
• Timely review and payment of all valid invoices submitted to the School
• Monitoring compliance will the terms of the School’s debt obligations, and timely payments of amounts due thereunder
• Development of financial analytics for use in short-term and long-term planning
• Obtaining timely annual audit of the School’s financial statements with a clean opinion from the School’s independent certified public accountant
• Prepare or arrange for the timely preparation and filing of all School tax returns, including payroll returns, sales and use tax returns, the School’s annual IRS Form 990, and any refund requests
• In consultation with the Deputy Superintendent and the School’s insurance broker determine, acquire, maintain and administer insurance coverage for the School with coverages and coverage amounts no less than those reasonably comparable to similarly situated schools, and timely submission of all reasonably apparent claims thereunder and administration of the resolution of such claims on behalf of the School (other than employment related claims that are to be administered by the Chief of Human Resources)
• Supervisory responsibility and authority with the Chief of Human Resources for payroll calculation and processing (including ensuring timely and accurate wage withholding, determination of overtime exempt and non-exempt status and employee/independent contractor status)
• Supervise all direct reports to the Chief of Finance.
• Member of the Operations Team
• Assumes schoolwide duties as assigned (arrival, dismissal, attendance at all staff required after school activities.)
Qualifications, skills and competencies:
• Strong quantitative and analytical
• Strong communications and presentation skills
• Proficiency in working with ERP financial/human resources systems
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
• Skilled at leading and participating in cross-functional teams
• Maintain integrity of confidential information
Education and experience requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Buisness, Finance or Accounting Required
• Master’s degree preffered
• 3-5 years experience in public sector budgeting and finance preferred
• Experience in charter or urban school districts preferred
