Olde Mecklenburg Brewery broke ground on its second location.
What’s happening: Charlotte’s oldest craft brewery is the first project within The Bowl, Ballantyne’s new dining and retail district, to break ground. It will be the area’s first brewery.
The Bowl: Owned and operated by Northwood, The Bowl at Ballantyne will be a “walkable, mixed-use neighborhood focused on culture, food, community and sustainability.”
Why it matters: South Charlotte/Ballantyne is the fourth hottest zip code, as Axios’ McKenzie Rankin reported. Just like with Great Wagon Road Distilling Co. expanding to Waxhaw, the more people flock to the suburbs, the more businesses will, too.
Context: Northwood bought 535 acres in Ballantyne in 2017 for $1.2 billion, as Axios’ Katie Peralta Soloff and Laura Barrero reported. The overhaul of the corporate park as a whole is called “Ballantyne Reimagined.”
Details: OMB Ballantyne will be the entrance to The Bowl. It will include around 14,000 square feet of indoor space, plus a 7,000-square-foot patio and second-level balcony. It will overlook a one-acre biergarten, which will be surrounded by trees.
- The space will be kid-friendly with a family zone, plus a playground.
What’s next: The brewery is scheduled to open in early 2024.
