Wayfinders’ Mission is to ignite students’ potential by expanding their confidence, connections, and horizons. We achieve this through summer camp experiences, year-round enrichment programs, and mentor relationships for self-motivated, underserved students.

Our Vision is that every child, regardless of zip code, has access to transformative life experiences through camp, mentorship, and educational opportunities. In 2021, we served 150 4th – 12th-grade students in Mecklenburg County, and we had 125 mentors supporting our scholars.

Job summary:
Wayfinders’ Mentor Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of mentor relations – recruiting, training, supporting, and measuring impact. This position can be performed remotely most of the time, but there will be occasions requiring in-person work. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination is required prior to starting the position. This position reports to the Executive Director, who will conduct an annual performance review.

Responsibilities:
Mentor recruitment 
• Recruit a diverse, committed pool of mentors through community and corporate partnerships and board/mentor networks; manage thorough background check process; match new mentors with scholars
Mentor training
• Lead mentor training efforts to equip mentors to support mentees ranging from 4th – 12th grade, focusing on concepts of resilience, social capital, racial equity, and cultural humility; update mentor training resources annually to match current best practices; expand and maintain Mentor Handbook
Mentor support
• Provide resources to assist mentors throughout their relationship with mentees (help with communication, ideas of ways to engage with mentees, training on the particular needs of college-bound scholars, etc.)
• Monitor mentor contact through periodic check-ins to provide accountability, assess needs, and receive feedback; facilitate quarterly mentor events to increase support and connection among mentors
Mentor impact
• Use best practices in volunteer stewardship to help mentors realize how valuable their service is; administer and report on annual mentor survey which gathers data about the mentoring program

Experience and skills:
• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Experience as a volunteer coordinator preferred
• Experience as a volunteer mentor preferred
• Excellent organizational skills
• Passion for the work of Wayfinders
• Strong verbal and written communication
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Ability to demonstrate empathy toward others
• Strong analytical skills
• Appreciation for and understanding of the work of racial justice
• Ability to represent Wayfinders to the public

Compensation and benefits:
This is a part-time, 20 hours/week position. The salary range is $20,000 – $25,000, depending on experience, qualifications, and skills. Wayfinders offers paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave, and this position is eligible for an annual bonus.
