Equipment Operator

Job summary:
Performs intermediate skilled work in the operation of motorized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

• Operating trucks and equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of streets, storm sewers and related facilities and systems; performing general labor tasks
• Operates backhoes, loaders and other equipment in situations requiring skill and care such as around underground and overhead utility lines, near overhanging branches, parked cars, heavy traffic and other situations
• Operates a street sweeper to clean streets maneuvering around parked cars, mailboxes and other obstructions
• Uses shovels to finish grading trenches for construction of storm sewer; fits pipe; uses hand tools and operates equipment to backfill trenches
• Operates construction equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, tampers, trenchers, air compression driven equipment and other related light and medium equipment; pushes snow
• Patches asphalt with gravel, hot asphalt, cold patch and other materials; operates air hammers, rollers and other light equipment; rakes asphalt; patches concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter, driveway aprons and other concrete structures
• Cuts grass with tractors, bush hogs and mowers; erects street signs
• May serve as lead worker and train employees in job skills
• Performs minor preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment
• Hauls equipment to the job site
• Participates in the Town’s safety program and adheres to safety procedures and policies of the department
• Performs related tasks as required

Knowledge and skills:
• General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy trucks and related light construction equipment;
• General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
• General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment
• Skill and care in the operation of several types of construction equipment
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
• Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

Education and experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of motorized equipment.

Physical requirements:
• This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
• Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and fingering
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
• Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
• Visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
• The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat, noise, vibration and hazards

Special requirements:
Possession of an appropriate commercial driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.

• Hiring Range: $35,042 – $45,545
