Fresh off opening a new Matthews shop, Moxie Mercantile is expanding again. This time it’ll be right around the corner from their flagship store in Plaza Midwood.
The new shop, called Betty by Moxie, will specialize in apparel, accessories and kids’ products. Owner Michelle Castelloe tells Axios it will open Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Details: The 2,500 square-foot store is at 1219 Thomas Avenue, in the space next to House of Africa that used to house a furniture store called City Supply.
- This’ll be the fourth Moxie boutique. The original one on Commonwealth, with gifts and artisan-made goods, opened in 2015. Castelloe opened a location in Davidson in 2018 and in Matthews last spring.
Why it matters: Castelloe sees her new shop as a way to preserve the local flavor of Plaza Midwood. “It’s our way of keeping control over our changing neighborhood,” Castelloe tells Axios.
- She’s right across from where Asheville brewery Burial will open a new taproom in the former Boris + Natasha space.
- And nearby, the developer Crosland Southeast plans a major overhaul of the Central Square property. It’ll transform into apartments, new retail, green space and offices.
Furthermore, there aren’t many places to shop for clothes in Plaza Midwood, Castelloe says. “We have enough restaurants and bars. We need more things to do,” she says.
- Expect products from popular brands like Ophelia & Indigo, Brooklyn Candle and YFB.
Behind the name: “Betty” is a nod to Betty Ziegler Mims, the former owner of Bride’s House of Originals, which was the shop that used to be in Moxie’s Plaza Midwood location.
“Betty was a retail leader in the city and someone I truly admire, the pure definition of moxie,” Castelloe said in a statement.
Hours: 11am-6pm Tuesday-Friday, 10am-6pm on Saturdays and 12pm-4pm on Sundays.
