Summer Lucille unapologetically offers an exclusively plus-size clothing line called Juicy Body Goddess.

The boutique owner enthusiastically greets customers with her signature line “welcome to Juicy, where you got to be two-something to do something” as they walk, or dance, into her store, which also serves as a safe place for marginalized women.

Driving the news: Lucille has been in business for 10 years, but recently got nationwide attention through her viral videos on TikTok. She has over 400,000 followers and videos with more than 2 million views.

Thanks to exposure on the app, Lucille has had to order more clothing to keep up with demand, is getting calls to open stores outside of Charlotte, and says she recently landed a spot on a reality show.

  • While she only has one location now, she is holding pop-ups in various cities. Keep up with her on Instagram for details.

Why it matters: Far too often plus-size clothing is hard to find, more expensive or doesn’t follow current trends. Lucille is changing that for her Charlotte shoppers.

“It’s unheard of to go into somewhere and you can fit everything as a plus-size (person),” Lucille says. In addition to offering trendy plus-size clothing, she strives to make her shop a safe space for women who, because of their size, might’ve been mistreated at other stores.

Sometimes she gives her customers, or queens as she calls them, crowns to wear as they shop.

The boutique is bright like Lucille’s personality and packed with a variety of clothing styles in sizes XL to 6X. She also sells hair extensions, lashes and accessories — items that anyone can wear regardless of size.

  • It’s located inside a Hidden Valley shopping center at 5015 N Tryon St #114.
  • Note: The sign outside the store reads “Material Girl,” which refers to Lucille’s store name. The clothing line is called Juicy Body Goddess. Customers can shop inside and online.

“TikTok has changed my life,” the boutique owner tells me. She just started using the app earlier this year. Now, multiple viral videos later, she’s getting opportunities that weren’t possible in her first 10 years as a business owner.

One of her first viral videos, she says, will air on MTV’s Ridiculousness later this year.

Background: Lucille first opened the boutique in 2011, after losing her corporate job, and after the death of her mom.

But she hasn’t always sold plus-size clothing. She says her inventory has evolved with her acceptance of her own body. The TikTok sensation says at one point she sold clothes that she had to diet to fit into.

  • “I was so tired of dieting, and I was only doing it to fit in my own clothes,” she tells me. “I just had an ah-ha moment…so I went ahead and (transitioned the store to) a plus-size boutique in 2016.”
