Summer is officially here, which means it’s rooftop season. Since opening in 2017, Merchant & Trade has become one of the top spots in Charlotte to experience breathtaking views of the city.

Take the elevator to the 19th floor of the Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel and you’ll arrive at Merchant & Trade — a swanky rooftop bar that offers stunning views of the skyline, Romare Bearden Park and Truist Field. Here’s what to expect:

Access: To get to the rooftop, look for the yellow sign on 3rd Street, leading you to the line to the elevator. Reservations aren’t required but expect a bit of a wait.

Dress code: Merchant & Trade used to be notorious for its dress code. But feedback from guests and a change in staffing have resulted in the dress code being relaxed.

Layout: The main indoor space has an expansive bar that has floor-to-ceiling windows and flows to the outdoor patio from either side. The patio has an area for the general public as well as a VIP private terrace that can be reserved for events.

Menu: More recently, Merchant & Trade has expanded its menu offerings to include entrees in addition to smaller, shareable plates.

  • Go with an order of the scallops and the buffalo fried mushrooms. For drinks, order an angel babyface cocktail; sans alcohol, ask for a Symphony (I may be a bit biased here).

Events: For the 4th of July, Merchant & Trade is hosting a Red, White & Blues Party with themed cocktails, special barbecue menu items, and music from some of Charlotte’s top DJs. Weekly events include their Mimosa Magnum Sundays where you can enjoy a mimosa with your choice of three fresh juice options or puree mixers.

Location/hours: Merchant & Trade is located on the 19th floor of the Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel at 303 South Church St. across from Romare Bearden Park and Truist Field. It’s open Wednesday and Thursday from 4-11pm, Friday from 4pm to midnight, Saturday from 2pm to midnight and Sunday from 2-9pm.
