Before the New York pizza joint opens its first Charlotte location in Plaza Midwood, it’s already secured its second in South End.

Details: Emmy Squared Pizza will open in the newly built Hawk tower at the corner of Doggett and Hawkins near South End’s Design Center. Development writer Jason Thomas first reported the news.

  • An Emmy Squared spokesperson tells me they’re on track for a summer opening in Plaza Midwood at 1508 Central Ave. An opening timeline wasn’t yet available for Emmy’s South End location.

Background: Emmy Squared, started in Brooklyn in 2016, is known for its square-shaped, crispy-bottomed Detroit-style pizza and its signature burgers.

  • Beyond New York City, the popular brand also has locations in Nashville, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Louisville.

Zoom out: If you’ve been eating more pizza since the pandemic, you’re not alone. For restaurants — and even breweriespizza was the hero of 2020, as the New York Times put it.

  • National chains like Domino’s and Papa John’s reported revenue growth.
  • Local pizzerias like Sal’s grew, too. The Jersey-style pizza joint opened its second location in Dilworth this year.
