We’re excited to announce that Danielle Chemtob will join Axios Charlotte as an investigative reporter starting June 7.

Why it matters: Danielle will be the first dedicated investigative reporter at any Axios Local outlet in the country. Her work, supported via a Knight Foundation grant, will examine topics that matter for Charlotte readers — from economic mobility and the long-term ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic to power and our ever-changing neighborhoods.

Background: Most recently a reporter at the Charlotte Observer, Danielle has years of experience covering growth, economic development, equity and business for local and national publications, including the Wall Street Journal and HuffPost.

  • At the Observer, Danielle regularly broke news in development and beyond as well as contributed deeply reported pieces like this gripping story of one neighborhood’s fight to preserve its identity after the relocation of century-old graves.
  • A California native, Danielle is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where she studied journalism and political science and served as a reporter and editor at The Daily Tar Heel.

What’s next: Danielle will dive deeper into the stories behind Charlotte’s rapid growth at Axios.

  • “I’m eager to join Axios Charlotte because I want to be a part of building a sustainable future for local media,” Danielle says. “I believe it’s more important than ever to tell stories in formats and platforms like Axios’ that reach new audiences, especially as Charlotte expands rapidly and becomes more diverse.”

My thought bubble: We’re thrilled to have Danielle’s expertise and enthusiasm on our team come June. It’s important to us that as the city grows, Axios Charlotte grows with it.
