Longtime antique store Sleepy Poet announced this week it’s relocating to a new location two miles down South Boulevard.

Why it matters: Over the course of its 23 years in business, Sleepy Poet has become a Charlotte institution and a local favorite for finding vintage and antique items.

The current location is over 60,000 square feet of winding aisles full of vinyl records, funky chairs, one-of-a-kind art pieces, tons for vintage clothing and pretty much anything else you can think of.

  • Walking through the store is like walking through different time periods.
  • With about 300 booths, a trip to Sleepy Poet can be an all-day excursion.

“You [leave] with stuff that you didn’t even know you were looking for,” owner Dickson Shreffler tells me. That’s what makes a trip to Sleepy Poet special, he says.

What to expect: The new Sleepy Poet location will be on six acres of space, which Shreffler hopes will allow for more parking and space for live music, food trucks and more.

  • The new store will also tout wider aisles and a more “straight-forward” layout, says Shreffler.

By the numbers: Shreffler purchased the property for $4.4 million, the Ledger first reported. He also plans to invest about $500,000 into the space ahead of its fall opening, CBJ reported.

Location: The new Sleepy Poet will be located at 6426 South Blvd. in the former Banner Service Corporation building.

Timeline: The target move-in date is September 1.
