Husbands Andrew Maldonado and Mick Shiro recently moved to Charlotte from California to be closer to family. They infused their love for travel with their minimalist style to make their new-build townhouse feel modern and personal.
Who: Maldonado and Shiro have been together 25 years and have been to 41 countries in the last decade, mostly for work. They also have houses in Lake Norman, California and Mexico. They love to entertain and collect art, and they started fostering dogs.
The house: The townhouse was finished in fall 2020. It’s 2,203 square feet and has 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.
- The house is right next to Highland Park Manufacturing Company Mill No 3, and their townhouse draws on that industrial feel.
- Maldonado describes their personal style as clean, modern, colorful and balanced.
Mural: The couple commissioned local muralist Cheeks to paint a large fish mural in their stairwell. “It was inspired by a piece of jewelry that my husband’s now-deceased mother owned and cherished,” Maldonado said.
Upgrades: Though their new build townhouse wasn’t originally meant to be custom, Maldonado and his husband pushed the limits with personal touches throughout the building process.
- They added wallpaper, texture, and color in most rooms.
- They also upgraded their closets and chose navy blue kitchen cabinets.
Inspiration: Most of their art and home accessories come from their travels — they’ve been to 41 countries the last 10 years. They’ve collected fine art, including three Andy Warhol paintings, found pieces in flea markets, and commissioned pieces from local artisans abroad.
