Our Ballantyne guide is proudly presented by Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates, P.A. From eye care to allergy care, the pros at CEENTA have you covered. Plus, with almost 20 locations (including one in nearby Blakeney), getting care is always convenient.
Drive just 30 minutes south of Uptown and you’ll reach Ballantyne, a swanky neighborhood that practically borders South Carolina.
Things are a little spread out, making walkability a challenge but not impossible.
Here’s a look at Ballantyne by the numbers:
- Average home price: $440,055
- Median household income: $96,435
- Average rent: $1,403
Here are 9 things to do, eat and drink while in Ballantyne.
(1) Grab a coffee and a pastry at Sunflour Baking Company
One of the servers told me their vanilla sugar rolls (basically a sweet croissant topped with powdered sugar) are one of their most popular pastries. They usually sell out early in the morning, so go early.
Location/hours: 14021 Conlan Cir. B-9. Open daily from 7am to 4pm.
(2) Explore Ballantyne’s greenways and parks
Ballantyne is home to 14 parks and green spaces where visitors can enjoy a picnic, feed the ducks, birdwatch, or just connect with nature. Cullman Park (pictured below) has benches and shaded patio tables and a peaceful waterfall that feeds into Cullman Pond. An added bonus is that catch and release fishing is permitted.
Location/hours: 14120 Ballantyne Corporate Pl. Open 24 hours.
(3) Check out the shops and restaurants at Ballantyne Village
Located across from The Ballantyne Hotel, Ballantyne Village is a boutique-style, outdoor shopping center that has become a signature landmark of the community. You’ll find restaurants, shops, and salons, and even some fun community events like the upcoming Shamrock ‘N The Village St. Patrick’s Day Party hosted by Blackfin Ameripub.
Location: 14814 Ballantyne Village Way.
(4) Grab lunch at The Blue Taj
If you’re looking for authentic and delicious Indian food, this is certainly the place to go. The Blue Taj is open for lunch and dinner and will have you leaving nice and full. One of their popular lunch items is the Southern Indian-Style Aromatic Curry. You can add your choice of protein (I went with chicken) and, depending on your heat tolerance, you can choose your level of heat on a scale ranging from one to five.
Location/hours: 14815 Ballantyne Village Way Ste. 170. Open for lunch Sun-Sat from 11:30am to 2:30pm, dinner Sun-Thu, 4:30- 9:30pm, and Fri & Sat, 4:30-10pm
(5) Make your great escape from a room at Timed Out Escape
You and your team can choose a room, then you’ll have one hour to use the clues in the space to find a way out. The rooms vary in difficulty and can host anywhere from two to eight people. Booked rooms are private and won’t be shared with other guests to allow for social distancing.
Location/hours: 12239 N Community House Rd. Open Monday to Thursday from 10am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 10am to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 10pm.
(6) Enjoy one of the best beer selections in the city at Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse
In addition to the 40+ beers on tap, Duckworth’s also has a cheesesteak on the menu that is underrated in my opinion.
Location/hours: 14015 Conlan Cir.
(7) Pick out something sweet from Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery
Cupcakes and ice cream under one roof. Their red velvet cupcake is popular. To make matters even more decadent, it’s topped with cream cheese frosting — I’ll take twelve.
Location/hours: 13855 Conlan Cir. Ste. G. Open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 8pm and from 11am to 6pm on Sundays.
(8) Book a staycation at The Ballantyne Hotel
At this point, we could all use a vacation. And while traveling for recreation still isn’t advised, going on a staycation can be a fun and safe option. Enjoy a change in scenery by booking a room at The Ballantyne Hotel. And during your stay, be sure to take advantage of their world-class spa and Gallery Restaurant.
Location: 10000 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy.
(9) Participate in a fun community event hosted by Northwood Office
A few upcoming events include outdoor fitness classes, Earth Day festivities, drive-in movie nights, plus live music and monthly markets.
Location: 11605 N. Community House Rd., Ste. 600.
