BW Sweets Bakery will be among the first tenants in the new 2023 Beatties Ford redevelopment opening late spring 2021.
Why it matters: BW Sweets owner Frankie White turned to baking after losing his son to brain cancer. Now, a decade later, he’s turned the bakery into a thriving business with two new locations in east Charlotte and South End opening in the midst of a pandemic with a third on the way.
Zoom out: The Beatties Ford redevelopment is part of the overarching “corridors of opportunity” program, which aims to revitalize parts of west Charlotte without displacing residents of historically Black neighborhoods in the area.
White says it’s important to retain Black-owned businesses like his here. “It’s not so much as pushing us out,” he tells me, “but it’s bringing us back in a different form.”
White sees the new location as an opportunity to give back to the community through a partnership with West Charlotte High School.
- The program will offer an afternoon internship for high school students during which White teaches them about baking and running a business.
- White says he wants to share valuable life lessons with his students. “I like to teach young people the dos and don’ts of life.”
Locations: The full-service bakery has locations on East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Winnifred Street in South End. This new location will be located at 2023 Beatties Ford Road.
