The team behind the 16-story South End tower under construction that’ll house Sycamore Brewing has unveiled a new name/brand for the mixed-use project: The Line.
Located on the rail trail at 2151 Hawkins, The Line will have:
- 285,000 square feet of office space across floors 8-16
- Parking on floors 2-7
- Multiple rooftop terraces
- 20,000 square feet of space for restaurants and other retail
The project doesn’t have any other office or retail tenants have been lined up yet. The Line will open sometime in the fall of 2021, the team said in a statement. Eventually, a new light rail station will be added next to The Line.

What they’re saying: “We are beyond excited to be a part of this amazingly cool space. With an expansive beer garden, second-story patio, house-roasted coffee offering, and a dynamic chef-driven food and beverage program, this experience is going to be second to none in the Queen City,” said Sycamore co-owner Sarah Brigham.
The brand: The team behind the project includes: Developer Portman Holdings, owner National Real Estate Advisors, and Foundry Commercial, which is handling the leasing. The architect is Gensler, and DPR is handling construction.
The property’s new brand, The Line, aims “to reflect the convergence of community and connection.” The project team created the brand in collaboration with Virgil Abloh, a fashion designer who owns the popular streetwear brand Off-White.
Why it matters: This kind of project further positions South End as one of the hottest office submarkets in the country. To name a few other major projects either underway or recently opened in the neighborhood:
- Lowe’s is building a 23-story office tower at the corner of Worthington and Camden that will serve as the company’s global tech hub.
- Cousins Properties recently acquired both The RailYard mixed-use development (for $201 million) and the 3.4-acre property on the rail trail that includes Slate (for $28.1 million).
- The Spectrum Cos. is developing Vantage South End, a mixed-use project at South Tryon Street and Carson Boulevard. It will include two 11-story office towers (one that’ll house LendingTree), retail space, a boutique hotel, and an urban park.
- The Square at South End is under construction where Sauceman’s used to be, on West Boulevard and Hawkins Street along Tryon. The 10-story project will have offices, apartments, retail, and an outdoor plaza.
“South End is one of the top markets in the country that mixes local culture and creative commerce,” Charles Pinkham, SVP of development for Portman Holdings, said in a statement.
