I’m finally tired of wearing athletic clothes every day. Bring on the lightweight dresses, dramatic sleeves, and pretty embroidery for summer.

Where I went:

Shopping during COVID: Social distancing and mask-wearing are required. I put on my mask before entering and only took it off to snap a quick photo in the dressing room. I put it back on while changing outfits/immediately after each photo.

Some stores have masks you can buy if you don’t bring your own, plus sanitizer is everywhere and marks on the floors help with social distancing. If you’re not comfortable going inside, you can check each store to see if they’re still offering curbside pickup, or shop online.

(1) Army pants (and flip-flops)

Every shop I went to had at least one variation of olive green pants. With most outings consisting of neighborhood walks, picnics, and other outdoor activities these days, functionality is key; these pants meet that standard and will carry you through fall.

Pair with: Any tops in your closet and some sandals. When it starts to cool down, I’d wear these with some cool sneakers.

I found these ATM utility joggers (so soft and comfy) at JT Posh ($96.85). They still have the tags on and retail $350.

army pants monkees

I wanted this pair to fit so badly. The fabric is lightweight, and the bow details softens the look. $178 from Monkee’s.

(2) Resort dresses

Vacations might be canceled but rainbow-colored resort wear isn’t. These easy-to-wear, throw on pieces make you look pretty and put together with even less effort than wiggling into leggings.

Pair with: Sandals, flip-flops (I really like these Tkeeks) for around the house, errands, etc. or wedges if you’re going all out. With these bold colors, I like really simple gold hoops if I’m feeling like jewelry.

Block print is having a moment. I love it paired with this breezy silhouette by Roller Rabbit. $198 at Charlotte’s.

resort dress monkees

This lavender number from Monkee’s couldn’t be more comfortable ($270). I paired it with this $185 belt that I’ve had my eye on for months.

resort dress rainbow 2 charlottes

This Oliphant print dress is everywhere this season. The colors are even more beautiful in person. I was *this close* to bringing this one home with me. $258 from Charlotte’s.

With pom-poms and sherbert-colored hues, this dress embodies summertime to me. $286 from Charlotte’s.

(3) Puff sleeves

This isn’t a new trend by any means, but I’m still obsessed with it.

Pair with: Jeans, white jeans, shorts, skirts — anything.

Pretend I’m not standing weird. This top was one of my favorite pieces from the try on. The colors, neckline, and smocked crop waist are a dreamy trifecta. I loved it with my Sam Edelman raw hem crop flares (old). $64 from Uniquities.

(4) Shirt dress

I’d say this falls under closet staple versus a trend. Even if you’re not going into the office, a shirt dress is what you wear when you want to feel your best and get stuff done.

Pair with: Sandals or fashion sneakers, or flats closer to fall.

Another JT Posh find (not in my size) that someone needs. This Marissa Webb poplin shirt dress goes for ~$270 new. It’s $169 right now. If it doesn’t sell by 7/17 it goes down to $126.75, and by the end of the month it’ll be marked down to $118.30.

(5) Embroidery

Embroidery shows a level of artistry and craftsmanship that makes pieces feel extra special. These pieces are the kind that’ll be in your closet for a while.

Pair with: Simple jewelry and rattan bag (if you haven’t given up on carrying a purse).

$228 from Charlotte’s.

embroidery skirt uniquities

I found this colorful, casual embroidered skirt ($100) from Uniquitites. I like the length, a lot — you could ride a bike or sit in the park without being too concerned. Paired it with a boyfriend shirt ($158) also from Uniquities.

embroidery Charlotte's

I think this dress would be comfortable and flattering on anyone. The fabric is luxurious and light, and the silhouette is really versatile. $318 from Charlotte’s.

(6) Face masks

It’s still reigns supreme as the No. 1 must-have accessory. If you’re still in need of one, here are just a few local shops selling reusable masks:

  • Abode — in store or through Instagram, $20-$25
  • Girl Tribe — online, $10
  • The Good Dogg — online, $17
  • Charlotte Knights — online, $10
  • 704 Shop — online, $18
  • Paper Skyscraper — in store, $4.95-$12.95

Masks are mandatory, so you might as well scoop up a cute one. Mine’s from Abode. It’s held up well in the washer and doesn’t fall off my nose.
