I’m finally tired of wearing athletic clothes every day. Bring on the lightweight dresses, dramatic sleeves, and pretty embroidery for summer.
Where I went:
- Monkee’s of Charlotte, 2839 Selwyn Ave., Suite Z
- JT Posh, 2400 Park Rd a2 (Note: you can also try to sell your clothes here if you have a one in one out closet policy.)
- Charlotte’s, 901 Providence Road
- Uniquities, 2028 South Blvd., Suite 2 (Atherton Mill)
Shopping during COVID: Social distancing and mask-wearing are required. I put on my mask before entering and only took it off to snap a quick photo in the dressing room. I put it back on while changing outfits/immediately after each photo.
Some stores have masks you can buy if you don’t bring your own, plus sanitizer is everywhere and marks on the floors help with social distancing. If you’re not comfortable going inside, you can check each store to see if they’re still offering curbside pickup, or shop online.
(1) Army pants (and flip-flops)
Every shop I went to had at least one variation of olive green pants. With most outings consisting of neighborhood walks, picnics, and other outdoor activities these days, functionality is key; these pants meet that standard and will carry you through fall.
Pair with: Any tops in your closet and some sandals. When it starts to cool down, I’d wear these with some cool sneakers.
(2) Resort dresses
Vacations might be canceled but rainbow-colored resort wear isn’t. These easy-to-wear, throw on pieces make you look pretty and put together with even less effort than wiggling into leggings.
Pair with: Sandals, flip-flops (I really like these Tkeeks) for around the house, errands, etc. or wedges if you’re going all out. With these bold colors, I like really simple gold hoops if I’m feeling like jewelry.
(3) Puff sleeves
This isn’t a new trend by any means, but I’m still obsessed with it.
Pair with: Jeans, white jeans, shorts, skirts — anything.
(4) Shirt dress
I’d say this falls under closet staple versus a trend. Even if you’re not going into the office, a shirt dress is what you wear when you want to feel your best and get stuff done.
Pair with: Sandals or fashion sneakers, or flats closer to fall.
Embroidery shows a level of artistry and craftsmanship that makes pieces feel extra special. These pieces are the kind that’ll be in your closet for a while.
Pair with: Simple jewelry and rattan bag (if you haven’t given up on carrying a purse).
(6) Face masks
It’s still reigns supreme as the No. 1 must-have accessory. If you’re still in need of one, here are just a few local shops selling reusable masks:
