Spending time at home has shown me the value of creating a functional, joyful space. And this greenery-filled, minimalist house in east Charlotte is the inspiration we all need to do just that.

Who: The house belongs to Charlotte green beauty makeup artist Sammie Kolk (@hullosam) and her husband. She has a private beauty business and is the head in-house makeup artist at Selenite Beauty in South End.

And her home decor is inspired by her love of sustainable living and thrifting, anything Parisian, and all things musical. She married a musician, and her blog used to be focused on music; music is always playing in their house and you’ll see instruments are a big part of its design.

Sammie also won Voters’ Choice for No. 1 Charlotte Influencer on Instagram for Charlotte Magazine’s 2020 BOB Awards.

The house: Sammie and her husband moved into their east Charlotte home in June 2018. It’s 2,170 square feet,  3 bedrooms, and 2.5 baths. It’s 20 minutes from Uptown on half an acre of land.

Sammie describes her style as retro, minimal, and Scandinavian. And she shops at Sleepy Poet Antique Mall, second-hand and thrift stores, West Elm, World Market, and IKEA for most furniture and decor.

Here’s a look around.

Prized possessions: Many pieces in Sammie’s home come with a story and sentimental value. Like the guest room couch, for example.

“It used to be in my parents’ old house, in their sunroom, and our dog who passed a few years ago loved sleeping and cuddling up on it,” she says.

Music: “I’m always listening to music, I married a musician, and my blog originally was a music blog,” Sammie said. So naturally, the sunroom/music studio is one of the best spots in the house.

The room is fulled with bright light, music equipment, and greenery.

Home office: When she’s not at Selenite Beauty (and when we’re not in the middle of a pandemic) Sammie runs her private business through her home.

“My studio beauty setup is pretty simple! I have a little corner with a comfy vintage pink velvet chair and then I have my kit on a little rolling storage type setup, along with the use of some of my shelves for laying things on!”

Sammie is also a self-proclaimed clean and neat freak (even pre-pandemic) and says a tidy atmosphere is a must.

Greenery is queen: Sammie’s green thumb is what I aspire to. Her entire home is dripping in plants.

“I kind of use it as one would artwork,” she says. “Plus, it acts as an air purifier, which I love.”

She gets her plants from Home Depot, Kings Garden CenterCovet Atelier x Grow CLT (right in the front of their shop!), and even IKEA.
