Interior designer Charlotte Staton knows a thing or two about creating beautiful spaces. She recently let us visit her historic Concord home and take a peek inside her custom designed closet.
Quick background: Charlotte Staton opened her interior design business in 2015, although she jokes that she’s been rearranging spaces and making furniture ever since her Barbie Dreamhouse days. Along with interior design, Charlotte is also an artist specializing in abstract painting.
Charlotte and her husband, Will, moved into their historic Concord home just over a year and a half ago. They share the space with their two cats, Little Man and Samantha.
The house: Built in 1924, the Staton’s Georgian-style brick home is nearly 100 years old. Before they took over, the home was extremely traditional on the inside. Charlotte sought to change that. “I really wanted to bring modern luxury to a historic home,” she says.
She’s since transformed the 5-bedroom home room by room. Among the first projects was designing a custom closet. If there’s one thing historic homes don’t have, it’s closet space.
To remedy that, the Statons converted one of the bedrooms into a dream closet with the help of the pros at California Closets.
When it comes to Charlotte’s design aesthetic, she describes it as “timeless and effervescent- while peppering in the unexpected.” She wanted her closet to have the same feel.
To create the design, Charlotte worked with design consultant, Jaclyn Littley of California Closets. “It was so simple and easy,” says Charlotte. “I was able to take a rough sketch to Jaclyn at the showroom and we put together a plan. She took measurements and then put everything in her 3D program so we could play with it. It was a really great experience.”

“We used a beautiful, neutral palette, combining Classic White with a touch of Linen and Gold to give the space a little more texture,” says Jaclyn. “The combination of soft finishes, built-in overhead spot lighting, and matte gold accessories gave this unique, 100-year-old home the modern flair that it deserved.”
The end result is a closet that feels more like a high-end boutique.
“I did a brief stint in retail, so this is all very satisfying to me,” says Charlotte. One of her favorite elements of the closet is the shoe wall. “The shoe wall is front and center and makes such a statement,” she says. “It makes such a big difference being able to see what you have. You get so much more mileage.”
The closet is also filled with small, but helpful, details like jewelry organizers, valet rods, and little cubbies for displaying purses and other accessories.
One of Charlotte’s favorite details of the closet are the valet rods.
