We’re looking for a Senior Reporter with a sharp eye, a big heart, a strong voice, and a relentless drive to tell big stories. We want someone who can break news and uncover scoops that move the needle in Charlotte. This is a general assignment position that might lean toward government and education issues one day, police and justice the next, and tender stories of courage and faith the next. The position will report to editor-in-chief Michael Graff and work closely with Katie Peralta, our dynamic senior editor and one of the best reporters in the region.

The senior reporter is a critical position for the Agenda as we continue to create a blueprint for a modern local media company. We reach more than 1 million readers each month. Currently, we have a staff of 9 full time employees and 5 senior contributors. We expect you to be self-directed and make us better from day one.

What you’ll actually do (we’ll revise these based on your strengths):

The only constraints on this general assignment job are that the stories must matter, and they must strike at the city’s core issues and questions: As we grow, who’s benefiting and who isn’t? With billions of dollars flowing around the city, what is everyone missing? How do we better connect people from all sides of the city?

  • Reporting. You’ll write 1-2 stories a week. They could be exclusives or explainers, breaking news or next-day perspective pieces, narrative-driven features or essays.
  • Coverage responsibilities. You’ll follow big issues in government (transportation, education, elections, you name it). You’ll slide between stories on communities whose voices haven’t always been heard, and stories on leaders who dominate headlines. You’ll take complex issues and make them understandable to an audience that ranges in age and background.
  • Projects. You’ll produce 4 to 6 in-depth, long-term projects each year, chipping away at them while you work on your weekly stuff. We’ll give you space when you need it.
  • Newsletter production. You’ll author and produce the newsletter once a week, sending it to our audience of nearly 50,000 daily subscribers
  • Teamwork. You’ll work as a team with Michael Graff and Katie Peralta to coordinate and deliver unforgettable coverage on major stories as they arise (i.e. Charlotte’s 2016 protests, or the 2020 Republican National Convention).
  • Social production. You’ll contribute news items to our social media feeds, breaking stories across Instagram (our main channel), Facebook, and Twitter. You’ll need to be comfortable shooting photos for these channels.
  • Strategy. You’ll be involved in creating a local news organization for Charlotte’s future. We’re a small team, so you’ll be a big part of strategy discussions.

  • Best in class salary. Our target is to be in the top 10% compensation tier for all roles.
  • Healthcare. The Agenda offers a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan and pays 75% of the total premium for you and your family.
  • Vacation and paid holidays. You get 28 total days off, including Christmas week and July 4th week.
  • Learn new skills. If you’re looking to learn things, we’ll cover the bill up to $1,000 annually (think conferences or classes).
  • Paid parental leave. 8 weeks paid from birth.
  • Hardware and software costs. 100% covered (ex: laptop, iPhone, phone bill, photoshop, etc). You’ll always have the best tools.
  • Simple expense accounts. You’ll get a company credit card. We don’t ask questions; just act like an owner.
