Front Porch Sundays, a new South End vendor market spearheaded by Shook Kelley, will be back again an October 4 with more craft beer, food trucks and local shopping.

Front Porch Sundays

The inaugural event held on September 6 bought together 36 vendors and a few hundred shoppers.

“The idea is to bring together people and encourage them to explore the neighborhood,” said event co-organizer Jennifer Schmidt Branham, who also owns The Boulevard at South End. She worked with Toni South, who owns Small Keys in 7th Street Public Market and the front porch where the event is hosted.

Located in the lot and on the porch at 2151 Hawkins Street, Front Porch Sundays is a walkable distance from next door Sycamore Brewing and nearby Lenny Boy Brewing. Showcasing vendors while also driving mutually beneficial foot traffic to local businesses was the inspiration behind the market.

With development rapidly changing the face of South End, questions are being raised about the future of small business in the neighborhood.

“South End is entering a new phase and I think that independent businesses are going to have to take a step back and find their place within the development,” Branham said. “I do see a place for us here but I’m not sure what part of the neighborhood that is just yet.”

Branham says the October event promises a fall theme with plenty of pumpkins. They’re still accepting vendor applications, and you can see a full list of October vendors here.

Front Porch Sundays is here to stay for awhile. Another event is in the works for November before the outdoor market shuts down for the winter to return in April.
