Construction on a new 10-story, mixed-used development called The Square at South End will start this month between West Boulevard and Hawkins Street along Tryon — where Sauceman’s currently stands.

This massive project includes a 10-story, 150,000-square-foot office building with 8,000 square feet of retail and apartments, connected by an outdoor plaza that will incorporate a park (Wilmore Centennial Park) in the future.

Oh, and there’ll also be a 5,000-square-foot rooftop restaurant with a 2,500-square-foot rooftop patio.

The development embraces South End’s eat-work-stay-play lifestyle.

Office setup: The first floor of the 10-story building will be for retail, and 15,000-17,000 square feet of office space will take up the other nine floors. In terms of design, expect a modern industrial feel with exposed brick, steel beams, glass and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. The office space will also feature outdoor decks on multiple floors that overlook Wilmore Centennial Park. The building will have views of Uptown and South End.

Amenities: The development will include a two-story glass fitness center; an outdoor wellness area for group classes or yoga; men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers; a 2,400-square-foot coffee bar and lounge area for tenants and guests that opens up to the park; and a rooftop restaurant/bar with a 2,500-square-foot patio overlooking Uptown.

The park: Beacon Partners, the developer behind The Square at South End, is partnering with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to bring Wilmore Centennial Park to life. The 1.5-acre park will be near the intersection of South Tryon and Kingston streets.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Beacon Partners in bringing the South End and Wilmore neighbors a new County park,” said Mecklenburg County Manager Dena R. Diorio. “The park will feature open grass areas, walkways and landscaping to a create a variety of outdoor spaces for gathering and leisure activities.”

Timeline: Construction is slated to start this month and wrap up late 2020

Who’s behind it all: Beacon Partners is the developer; Beacon and David Furman are developing the apartments; Axiom is the architect; the general contractor is Edifice; the civil engineer is LandDesign; and Kristy Venning and Erin Shaw at Beacon Partners will handle leasing.
