Tutor Manager (HIRED)
Overview:
Helps Education Fund (HEF) connects research with practice and engages teachers, parents and volunteers to improve student learning. HEF is a North Carolina based nonprofit that works to improve educational equity by providing free and low-cost programs and services that are supported by research to improve students’ learning. HEF was founded in 2011 by Dr. John Begeny, former K-12 educator and currently a professor at NC State University. HEF’s first program, Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS), developed in 2005 by Dr. Begeny, is an evidence-based, highly structured, one-on-one intervention that can be used by trained teachers and volunteers to improve children’s reading fluency. Fluency is the link between sounding out words and the ability to read and understand text and is a critical skill that a child must learn to meet 3rd-grade reading proficiency.
In 2018, HEF formed a partnership with Read Charlotte a 10-year initiative that coordinates, integrates and aligns people, resources and data to double third-grade reading proficiency from 39% in 2015 to 80% by 2025. During the 2018-19 school year, HEF provided training and coaching to over 150 volunteer tutors providing HELPS in 10 Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMS) elementary schools. In the 2019-2020 school year, HEF will increase its capacity to provide implementation of HELPS across 14 CMS schools using volunteer tutors and federal-work study tutors. The goal is to serve over 360 second and third-grade students, with an estimated 200+ tutors (both volunteer and Federal-Work study). Read Charlotte and HEF will work together to engage with community organizations, businesses, colleges and universities to (a) access volunteer and federal work-study students and (b) conduct marketing and outreach to recruit community volunteers.
