Charlotte has a sizable private school community, bigger than anywhere else in the state.

Here’s a quick look at size and cost:

These are the largest private schools in Mecklenburg County — plus a few regionally. Our list only includes schools with 500 or more students. Enrollment numbers come from school and state data.

By the numbers:

  • About 18,812 students in Mecklenburg County go to one of 89 private schools here, per state data.
  • That compares with roughly 140,406 students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
  • Nearby metropolitan areas like Wake and Guilford counties have 87 and 35 private schools respectively.

Our list is ordered from most expensive to least, based on the lowest grade offered (including transitional kindergarten, excluding pre-school programs).

COVID-19 precautions: Each school is responding to the coronavirus pandemic differently. While private schools are not subject to CMS’ guidelines, they are required to follow state law relating to the coronavirus. Most schools are back to in-person learning or a mix of in-person and virtual with options for high-risk students who need to learn virtually.
