Protagonist Clubhouse, Charlotte’s newest brewery, will open its doors later this spring at the intersection of 35th and Davidson in the heart of NoDa.
The nano-brewery and taproom will occupy 1,700 square feet of space formerly occupied by NoDa Grocery.
The concept comes from childhood friends Ryan McKillen, Mike Salzarulo and Ryan Owens. They grew up in Ohio and although they considered opening in Cincinnati, they ultimately chose Charlotte.
“We picked Charlotte, and particularly NoDa, because it’s a friendly place,” said co-founder Ryan Owens. “The city is buzzing, with new people showing up everyday.”
In a statement, Protaganist Clubhouse said that they plan to create a “unique experience for the beer nerd and novice alike.”
“We hope to support an openness to experimentation, a welcoming feeling and approachable atmosphere, a sense of belonging, and generosity toward the people around us,” said co-founder Ryan McKillen who is a former software-engineering leader at Uber.

The Clubhouse will have 20-24 taps that will have beer from their own system as well as guest taps — as well as craft cocktails and a focused food menu
“Our goal is to offer an elevated beer tasting experience. Elevated means offering curious beer drinkers every opportunity to expand their palates and knowledge,” said co-founder Mike Salzarulo. “We will have a plethora of engaging opportunities, from service by cicerones, to ample tasting options and creative means of distributing information. For the real beer connoisseurs, we’ll offer a unique membership program and other innovative sampling platforms and classes.”
Food: They’ll offer small bites and a few signature items.
Vibe: Expect a living room atmosphere. They aim to create a space that is appealing for beer nerds like myself and those who aren’t who just want something delicious to sip on.

This same ownership group also plans to open a massive brewery at 21st and Brevard in Optimist Park.
That project is much farther out but they had zoning approved and we will give you more info on that as it develops.
