Pinhouse, a new two-story self-serve bar with duckpin bowling, will open on Saturday, July 27 in Plaza Midwood.
The latest concept from Hoppin’ owners Rich Moyer and Drew Nesemeier is also their biggest. Pinhouse features 72 self-pour taps — 22 downstairs and 50 upstairs — and four duckpin bowling lanes in the basement. The 6,023-square-foot space formerly occupied by Midwood Cleaners is located at 2306 Central Ave., a couple blocks down the road from Resident Culture.
For comparison, their South End hot spot Hoppin’ is 4,600 square feet and has 60 taps.
“We are really excited about bringing something new to the city and expanding Plaza Midwood while also connecting it with Commonwealth,” Moyer said. “We are just really excited to get Pinhouse open.”
Self-serve taps: Pinhouse uses the same iPourIt dispense technology with wristbands as Hoppin’. Just grab a wristband at the door, link it to your credit or debit card and swipe to serve yourself at the taps. They’ll have 72 taps with beer, wine, prosecco and kombucha. The beer system was setup by FN Beer Guys.
Duckpin bowling: They’ll have four duckpin bowling lanes and will be rolling out a reservation system for online booking. If you’re not familiar, duckpins are shorter, smaller and lighter bowling pins that you try to knock down with a ball that’s a little bigger than a softball.
Food situation: Moyer and Nesemeier have partnered with Chef Rob Masone of Kre8 Twisted Eats on a full-time food truck that’ll be parked on site daily (Tuesday-Sunday). Masone, known for inventive gourmet eats like his Bosshog mac & cheese egg rolls, will debut a new menu for Pinhouse this week. He also has a permanent food truck on the patio at Hoppin’ as well as a full kitchen at Wooden Robot.

Interior design: The taproom has a distinct Gatsby-inspired design aesthetic with lots of gold, navy and burgundy, marquee-style lights and luxe textures like leather and velvet. Emilie Moseley and Rosarae Drury of Vignette Interior Design, the same team that designed Hoppin’, created the space. Standout decor features include a unique light fixture made of repurposed crystal decanters and the historic Midwood Cleaners sign repurposed and on display in the basement.
Layout: The two-story space features self-serve taps, a mix of lounge, high-top and table seating, roll-up garage doors and outdoor patios overlooking Veterans Park on both levels. The duckpin bowling lanes are in the basement which opens out to a spacious lawn and fireplace. The view from out back makes you feel so far away from Charlotte.
Parking: The answer to the eternal question in Plaza Midwood is YES, Pinhouse will have parking. They’ve got about 30 spots in a dedicated lot.
Grand opening party: Pinhouse will host an official grand opening party on Saturday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to midnight. Entertainment includes a top score duckpin champion competition, cornhole tournament, live performance from Nashville star Canaan Cox and raffle prizes. They’ll also have local vendors and food trucks on site.
