A new pizza place is coming to The Metropolitan, opening Tuesday at lunchtime.

Pizzeria Omaggio will be located in the old Revolution Pizza space, which was Pizza Fusion prior to that. The high turnover of pizza restaurants in the space has sparked questions of a “pizza curse” in Midtown. But to the doubters, owner Daniel Siragusa said confidently, ” Just wait. Just let them try it.”

Daniel and Maria Siragusa

Siragusa comes from a long history of successful family restaurants. The Rome native was raised in Miami where his father launched the famed Italian franchise Mario the Baker. He took over his own Mario the Baker in Biloxi, Mississippi but Hurricane Katrina wiped it out in less than a year.

“There was absolutely nothing left,” said Siragusa. “Not a spoon, not a fork, nothing but the floor.”

He went back to Miami and continued operating his family’s restaurants but last year decided it was time to get out of Florida’s heat and into his own venture.

“I want a place I can call home and I want to be a part of the community,” he said of his decision to land his family here in Charlotte.

If the menu is any indication, Siragusa is bringing his A game with Pizzeria Omaggio. The casual quick-service restaurant features a selection of authentic appetizers like the traditional antipasto Italiano (parmiggiano reggiano, provolone, prosciutto crudo, salami soppresata, mortadella, olives, roasted peppers, grilled zucchini and grilled eggplant) as well as salads, soups and panini.

But the main attraction, of course, is the pizza.

Pizzeria Omaggio offers 19 pizza specialties as well as build-your-own options all served in a personal 11-inch size. When it comes to pizza, Siragusa believes in thin, light, crispy crust and only the best ingredients. He’s confident in his food and says quality food, cleanliness and customer service are the foundation of a successful restaurant.

“We’re trying to elevate the experience to get as close to a full-service dining experience as possible while remaining a casual counter service restaurant,” he said.
