“I designed our kitchen to have a modern spin on the working or ‘downstairs’ kitchens of the big vintage country estates – think Biltmore house or Downton Abbey! I wanted a space that was both upscale and sophisticated yet timeworn and had an inviting familiarity at the same time. It sounds cliche, because it’s our name, but it really is that deft mix of new and old that gives a space that special blend of timeless luxury in a very comfortable way. Interweaving clean lines and texture like the marble countertops and oversized windows was critical in balancing the more rustic elements in order to keep the space current.

I chose to place a table at the kitchen’s center in lieu of an island because it brought back the same warmth my husband and I felt when our families gathered around our grandma’s kitchen table for Sunday dinner many years ago. I’ve designed many big islands – and they’re wonderful, but with this home, I wanted an antique table for a more personal, intimate feel. And combining a hearth room within the kitchen entices you to linger. Our family spends most of our time together in our kitchen so it was important to me to have a space that encouraged our kids to sit and talk a little longer. You can put your feet up and sit in front of the fireplace while the kids do their homework at the table and the chef (that’s me usually!) cooks. It’s a space designed for family time.” -Mary Ludemann, New Old
