Here are 9 things you need to know about Brewers at 4001 Yancey.

Early this week, I got a quick tour of the space from ABV’s marketing manager Bradley Michael.

(1) The space is huuuge.

Brewers at 4001 has 269 seats inside, 270 seats outside and an event space with a total of 104 seats.

(2) To avoid confusion, the 28,000-square-foot dual-branded Victory and Southern Tier brewery will go by the name “Brewers at 4001 Yancey,” which is honestly pretty confusing.

I wish they would have just called it Victory or Southern Tier.

In addition to the brewery, Artisanal Brewing Ventures has moved its corporate headquarters and about 40 employees into the building.

(3) There are 120 taps with 40 different offerings. Never heard of Victory or Southern Tier? They’re a pretty big deal. They brewed roughly 255,000 barrels in 2017. (OMB did about 21,000 for comparison.)

The most popular Victory beers are Golden Monkey, Sour Monkey, Prima Pils, Dirt Wolf Double IPA, Homegrown Lager, Summer Love Ale and Hop Devil.

The most popular Southern Tier beers are their Southern Tier IPA, Pumking Imperial Ale, 2X IPA, Nu Skool IPA and 8 Days a Week Blonde Ale.

My personal favorites are Southern Tier’s Nu Skool IPA and Victory’s Golden Monkey (9.5%, watch out).

I loved talking with David Harries, Director of Brewing Operations. Great guy.

(4) There are three distinct open-air patio spaces — a huge outdoor patio to the right of the building, a unique space dubbed “The Ruins” in front of the building and a covered patio with a view of Uptown.

The Ruins will be the most popular space.

(5) If you over-serve yourself, no sweat: You’ll find a turn-key drop off area for Uber/Lyft rides out front.

They’ve also got a retail space with a beer chest where you can buy beer and gear.

The retail store will have gear and a bunch of coolers stocked with Victory and Southern Tier beer.

(6) Inside the massive taproom, you’ll also find three areas with lounge seating.

I like this idea. It helps to break up the large open space.

(7) Don’t underestimate the restaurant side of the operation.

Although you can start a tab at the bar, Brewers at 4001 Yancey offers full table service (expect a ton of servers) and a restaurant-style kitchen operation. The menu is legit — it has everything from smoked salmon to BBQ plates.

They’ve hired Drew Ward as their executive chef. Drew’s worked in the kitchens of Jim Noble (Rooster’s, King’s Kitchen) and Frank Scibelli (YAFO, Mama Ricotta’s, Paco’s Tacos and Midwood). I asked Frank about Drew and he shared with me that Drew is talented.

Burger, obviously

Fried chicken – marinated for 24 hours in beer and served with a jalapeño gravy. I also think their shrimp and grits will be popular.

(8) Brewers at 4001 Yancey has a 120-person private event space available for rent with its own patio connected by a garage door.

(9) Expect Lower South End to continue to boom and become a go-to party district in Charlotte.

Brewers at 4001 Yancey joins a neighborhood already booming with entertainment and drinking options, including Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Queen Park Social, Sugar Creek Brewing Company, Doc Porter’s Distillery, The Broken Spoke, GoodRoad Cider Works and Charlotte’s biggest escape room, Escape Tactic.

Will ABV outshine Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Sycamore Brewing in taproom popularity? We’ll see.
