Undercurrent Coffee opens on Thursday in Plaza Midwood.

“My interest in coffee began as a teenager; beyond the drink I enjoyed, I felt a sense of belonging in the cafes I frequented and explored,” said founder and owner Todd Huber. “Erin [his wife] and I want to recreate that experience for our neighborhood.”

Undercurrent is located in Plaza Midwood at 2012 Commonwealth Avenue near Legion Brewing.

Inside, you’ll find a beautiful space, complete with a large coffee bar with beautiful tile work and a total of 42 seats, from bistro tables to lounge-style sofas, throughout the dining area.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.




Undercurrent Coffee worked with Cluck Design Collaborative (lead), Fine Grit Specialty Finishing Shop26 Industries, and The Plaid Penguin on the space.




Undercurrent’s focused food menu includes breakfast dishes, toast and salads.


Avocado Toast ($7) – dukkah (spiced seeds and nuts), micro amaranth


“Plough Boy’s” Grit Bowl ($6.50) – Anson Mills’ slow roasted Jarvis corn grits, crimini mushrooms, roasted peppers, onion and Goat Lady Dairy chevre


Bluebery Chai Pudding ($5.50) – flax seed, oat, blueberry milk, cacao and sorhum syrup.


Farmer’s Tan Salad Bowl ($14) – cold marinated Anson Mills’ Sea Island red peas and Carolina Gold rice grits, navy bean and lemon hummus, kale, avocado, pickled onions, parsley, mint

Undercurrent’s primary roaster is Onyx Coffee Lab. They’ll also have rotating options from the following roasters:  Verve Coffee RoastersEquator Coffee and Ritual Coffee Roasters. Cold brew will be on tap from the Charlotte-local roaster, Pure Intentions Coffee


In addition to the cafe, Undercurrent Coffee will also have a 200-square-foot classroom in the back of the building with state of the art coffee equipment. They’ve got a fancy Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) campus accreditation and will offer a variety of public coffee classes, as well as professionally-focused SCA Barista and Brewing certification courses.
