BackStage Lounge, a dark, windowless craft cocktail lounge doing its best to stay under the radar, is now open in an unexpected spot behind a taco bar on South Boulevard.

You’ll find it on the back side of SouthBound, the new SoCal-inspired taco and tequila joint at 2433 South Boulevard. Just look for the green light.

Once inside, you’ll follow a mural-lined hallway to a phone booth with red curtains.

Pick up the phone and wait for someone to greet you at the peep window. They’ll ask if you’re a member but don’t panic if you’re not; first timers will be invited in to sign up.

Memberships are $20/year and you can sign up online in advance or when you arrive. Going forward, you’ll check in with your black membership card or with your phone number if you don’t have it handy.

It’s a cozy, intimate space inside with about a dozen bar seats, a few high top tables and a handful of booths.

The booths are named to honor legendary Charlotte music venues that have closed, like Amos’ Southend and Double Door Inn, which both shut down last year.

The menu features a limited selection of small plates and an extensive line up of classic and specialty cocktails.

They’ll present you with a rotating feature punch to sip on while you think it over.

You won’t find it available online so here is the full BackStage Lounge menu:

Don’t miss the market price pairings at the end featuring Stoli and caviar plates for two as well as a whiskey, bourbon and chocolate offering.

We went with the mezze sampler ($12), chili dogs ($12), sazerac ($13) and spicy paloma ($13).

BackStage Lounge is open Wednesday through Sunday 5 p.m. – 2 a.m.
